Make the most of your space

We're all about making self-storage as easy as possible so here are our top tips for getting set up, saving time, money and space, and making sure your stuff stays in good condition during storage.

How to pack your stuff

Place any items you may want to access first on the trailer so they will be placed in the unit last (near the door for easy access).
Place protection on concrete floors for mattresses, furnishings and books.
Store large or heavy items towards the rear of the unit so they can be used as a base to be stacked on with lighter more fragile items.
Store longer items (such as beds, mattresses and tabletops) along the walls.
Where possible, store couches (with the exception of sofa beds) on their ends to maximise space.
Wrap mirrors and fragile pictures with bubble wrap and never store these items flat!! Always place mirrors in an upright position and protect them by securing them between softer items such as mattresses or bed bases.
Keep fridges clean and ensure the doors are slightly open when storing to avoid mould build up.
Make sure all water is drained from washing machine hoses and ensure freezers and fridges are completely defrosted.
The space inside wardrobes, cupboards, desks, fridges and other items can be used to store items, adding valuable space inside your storage unit.
Books should be packed flat so the spines won’t break.

What not to store

Generally speaking, items that are considered dangerous will not be permitted in your storage unit. As a quick guide you can not store combustible, flammable, hazardous or toxic materials such as petrol, compressed gases, toxic or biological waste, acid, corrosives, fertilisers, paint, cleaners, asbestos, fireworks, weapons or ammunition.
Canned foods can be stored, but perishable food products such as cereals, produce or meats are not allowed. These may rot or attract rodents or other pests.
Any stolen or illegal items or goods cannot be stored in your unit.

More packing tips

Before you commit to a storage unit, visit the site to get an idea of how big the unit is, how and where you can park the car/truck and trailer.
Do not underestimate the number of packing boxes you will need for self storage. Start packing early so if you run out of boxes or tape you can easily get more with plenty of time to spare.
When packing your boxes, ensure you carefully use all space inside the box otherwise they may burst or collapse. Pack empty space with paper or spare clothing or linen to prevent boxes collapsing.
Using the same sized boxes makes for easy stacking.
Seal boxes completely with box packing tape to keep out dust and to strengthen when stacking.
